Hello.

The US and Iran traded fire over the weekend for the first time in a month. American forces hit rocket launchers on Iran's Larak Island, Tehran answered with missiles at US bases in Jordan, and oil ripped past $90.

Stocks dipped Monday but still closed out a winning August across the board. The bigger shift happened in rate markets: after Chairman Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole debut, traders now see a September hike as more likely than not.

Today brings fresh fuel for that debate, with ISM manufacturing and JOLTS job openings this morning ahead of Friday's jobs report. Meanwhile, John Ternus officially takes the wheel at Apple, and OpenAI just showed why its IPO may be the most watched listing in years.

We break it all down below.

💰 ChatGPT Ads Hit $1 Billion in 200 Days

OpenAI said Monday its advertising business crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate roughly 200 days after launch, a milestone the company is touting as proof of its diversified business model. Ads are now live in more than 40 countries, with tens of thousands of advertisers on the platform, and OpenAI opened self-serve buying Monday across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

The timing is the story. OpenAI is gearing up for what's expected to be a massive IPO and needs to show investors a diversified business behind its $852 billion valuation. Ads monetize its biggest untapped asset: the vast majority of ChatGPT's roughly 1 billion weekly active users are on the free tier. The company is targeting $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year, so the trajectory is steep even as the gap draws critics. "This announcement is both incredibly impressive and terribly disappointing," Emarketer analyst Nate Elliott said, noting the run rate still leaves OpenAI short of its own goal.

The bigger question is what this does to digital advertising. AI chat is the first new attention pool at Google and Meta's scale in a decade, and rivals have split on monetizing it: Anthropic has rejected ads entirely, betting an ad-free experience wins trust. Both models are now being tested at scale.

The takeaway: You can't buy OpenAI stock yet, but this fight is investable today. If you think AI chat siphons ad dollars the way social did, the pressure lands on Alphabet and Meta's core franchises, and the coming OpenAI listing is one to watch. But if the gap between run rate and target says AI ad monetization is still finding its footing, the incumbents' ad machines look more durable, and the disruption trade deserves patience over chase.

📰 Market Headlines

US stocks slipped Monday as renewed fighting between the US and Iran drove oil higher and fanned inflation worries, but all three indexes still closed out a winning August.

Oil surged after US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island Sunday, the first acknowledged American strike on Iranian positions since late July. US Central Command said Revolutionary Guard forces were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz; Iran retaliated with missile attacks on two US air bases in Jordan. Brent crude jumped back above $90 a barrel while WTI climbed more than 2% toward $86, and energy stocks like Chevron and Exxon Mobil were among the market's only gainers. The national average gas price ticked up to $4.08 per gallon heading into Labor Day weekend.

The rekindled conflict is amplifying rate worries after Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh said Friday at Jackson Hole that inflation is running too hot and the central bank has "work to do." Traders now put the odds of a 25-basis-point hike at the Fed's September meeting above 60%, up from roughly 40% a week ago, according to CME FedWatch data.

President Trump announced drug pricing deals with nine more pharmaceutical companies, including UCB, BridgeBio, and Sun Pharma. The midsize drugmakers agreed to offer state Medicaid programs most-favored-nation prices, matching the lowest paid in other developed countries, in exchange for tariff protection. The White House says 26 companies covering 89% of the branded drug market have now signed on, and the nine newest committed to invest $19.6 billion collectively in US manufacturing.

Donald Trump Jr.'s fund 1789 Capital is boosting its Polymarket investment by around $300 million, the Wall Street Journal reported, leading a roughly $1 billion round that values the prediction market platform above $20 billion. The firm first invested in August 2025, when Polymarket was valued around $300 million.

Friday's August jobs report headlines the week ahead, the key data point before the Fed's September 16 decision, with ISM manufacturing and JOLTS job openings due Tuesday morning.
