  • Apple’s AI ambition: Apple is now reportedly spending “millions of dollars a day” on its R&D budget solely dedicated to AI product research. The company has set an ambitious goal that would allow users to ask Siri to “automate tasks involving multiple steps" (Supercharged)

  • China sends chills down Tech’s spine: Beijing's widening curbs on iPhone use by government staff are raising concerns among US lawmakers and fanned fears that American tech companies heavily exposed to China could take a hit from rising tensions between the countries (Reuters)

  • Renting the gap: New apartment construction is on track to top a 50-year high, with nearly 461,000 units expected to be built across the U.S. this year. Another 1 million rental units are slated for completion through 2025, but higher costs and other headwinds could slow development (Axios)

  • Is oil going to $100? U.S Crude inventories fell by way more than expected. Stockpiles slid by 6.3 million barrels, versus 2.1 million expected, and are now 4% below the five-year average 6.3 million barrels (WSJ)

  • Help wanted: The number of unemployment benefits fall to lowest level in 7 months in another sign that the labor market remains largely unaffected by higher interest rates (AP)

  • Shedding stores: Kroger (KR) and Albertsons (ACI) supermarkets are in talks to sell more than 400 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers for nearly $2 billion as part of their proposed $25 billion merger (Reuters)

  • There’s a meme for this: The SEC is probing Ryan Cohen's ownership and sale of now-defunct retailer Bed Bath & Beyond; also asked for information from the company's current and former board members (SA)

  • LNG output to take a hit: Workers at Chevron's (CVX) LNG projects in Australia went on strike after talks broke down, potentially disrupting output from facilities that account for over 5% of global supply (BBC)

  • New Era IPO: New Era Cap, a supplier of major sports headware, has kicked off preparations for an IPO that could value it at $4 billion to $5 billion (Reuters)

Health-plan costs expected to jump 6.5% next year: Health-insurance costs are climbing at the steepest rate in years, with some projecting the biggest increase in more than a decade will wallop businesses and their workers in 2024. Read more»
