📊 Alternative Assets Have Been Forgotten. Time to Check In.

For months, every dollar went into AI chips and mega-cap tech. Gold sits at $2,450 per ounce. Bitcoin recovered to $97,000. Real estate cap rates hover around 5-6%. Commodities and collectibles softened. If you're building for 40+ years with AI driving abundance and job creation, growth investing should still be your core play. But that doesn't mean you ignore everything else.

Growth and alternatives serve different jobs. Growth compounds wealth over decades. Alternatives dampen volatility when growth gets expensive or correction fears spike. Gold typically moves up when recession fears hit. Real estate generates income. Commodities reset when inflation ticks higher. You need both.

If you're convinced AI will dominate the next decade, keep growth at 75-85% and alternatives at 15-25%. This gives you maximum exposure to your thesis without being defenseless in a correction. Pull your allocation sheet. What percentage sits in alternatives? If it's under 15%, you don't have enough cushion. If it's over 40%, you might be leaving compounding money on the table.

📰 Market Headlines

US stocks climbed Tuesday as semiconductor names surged and investors looked past fresh tariff threats on Canada and renewed hostilities with Iran.

  • The tech-heavy Nasdaq jumped 1.3%, the S&P 500 gained 0.9%, and the Dow rose 0.7% as chip stocks staged another rally following strength in Asian markets overnight.

President Trump unveiled 50% tariffs on an array of Canadian goods using a Depression-era provision of the Tariff Act of 1930 that hasn't been invoked for this purpose before. The duties target autos, dairy, beer, hockey sticks, milk, and chemicals, with 30 days before they take effect. The White House exempted Canadian oil imports, a notable carve-out as crude prices trade at their highest levels since mid-June. "Canada's been very, very tough on us over the years," President Trump said Tuesday in the Oval Office. Trade lawyers are telling businesses to treat the tariffs as credible. Andrew Siciliano, head of trade at KPMG, warned that "thirty days is a very short timeframe in supply chain planning," while Ted Murphy at Sidley Austin said he wouldn't bet on talks averting the new duties given the state of US-Canada relations.

Oil prices eased slightly Tuesday after surging 20% in July amid the US-Iran standoff. Brent crude traded around $90 per barrel after the UK navy reported strikes on two vessels around the Strait of Hormuz. Commercial traffic through the waterway hit its lowest level in three weeks. The Iran-backed Houthis announced plans to impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia, threatening the flow of millions of barrels the kingdom exports via the Red Sea. President Trump played down prospects for immediate talks, saying Iran "wants to desperately meet" but "until they're ready to meet in a meaningful way we have no interest." US retail gasoline prices have climbed back above $4 a gallon.

Nvidia shares rose nearly 2% after the company disclosed it has taken a stake in neocloud provider Nebius. Nebius stock popped more than 18% on the news. The investment signals Nvidia's continued push to deepen ties across the AI infrastructure ecosystem as chip demand remains elevated heading into earnings season.

Super Micro Computer jumped after preliminary results showed a record $60 billion backlog, according to Bloomberg. The server maker has been a major beneficiary of the AI buildout, with demand for its GPU-ready systems continuing to outpace supply.

Apple is launching a device leasing program with Klarna to spur sales, Bloomberg reported. The "Upgrade" program will let customers finance iPhones and other devices through the buy-now-pay-later provider. The move comes as Apple looks for ways to boost hardware sales amid a sluggish upgrade cycle.

Alphabet reports earnings Wednesday, with investors watching closely for updates on AI spending plans and the search giant's response to mounting competition. The results kick off a wave of Big Tech earnings that will test whether the sector's rally has legs.
